How to Install VLC Player in BackTrack 3

First, download the package from here http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/pkg/12.2/vlc-0.9.9-i486-1alien.tgz and save it in your / directory or you can do this from the command line by opening up a Konsole and typing:
cd /This will put you in the / directory
wget http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/pkg/12.2/vlc-0.9.9-i486-1alien.tgzThis will download the file in the present directory
tar zxf vlc-0.9.9-i486-1alien.tgzThe tar tool will unzip and untar this file
cd installchanges the directory to /install
chmod 777 doinst.shchanges the permission so you can execute the file
cp doinst.sh /copies the file to the / dir
cd ..goes back to the / directory
doinst.shexecutes the script
rm -R doinst.sh vlc-0.9.9-i486-1alien.tgz /install removes unwanted files.

    After “apt-get update”,
    I have used “apt-get install vlc” in BackTrack 4.
    I am running as root off of Live CD.

    Clicking menu>Multimedia>VLC media player does nothing.

    If I have to force it to open with root privelages, How do you do that?

    please advise

    tar: vlc-0.9.9-i486-1a1ien.tgz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
    tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
    tar: Child returned status 2
    tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I will not pay 5.99 for a download of this… i paid 5.99 for a flashplayer and it was the worst piece of garbage I even purchased online since punch cards were out……. if there is a way you will let me try this on a monlthly basis and let me wee how it works we might be able to work soemthing out but as far as im concerned its just another piece of junk with someone trying to get rich….Mark pfeiffer 586-744-0132

  7. you need to update the link. for current link you should type “wget http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/pkg/12.2/vlc-1.0.1-i486-2alien.tgz

    vlc installed but it is not opening
